It started with a need. A need for help. A need for life to go back to the way it was before. As "normal" as possible.
We prayed. We cried. Some of us even called home to check on loved ones. And then we prayed some more.
Then, came an idea. What if...?
When the Philippines was struck by the devasting typhoons in September, the people of Willowdale Community Christian Assembly came together and out of prayer, obedience and a genuine love for people, Love Philippines was birthed.
The goal: to raise $10,000 to give directly to agencies and/or churches working directly on the ground in the disaster zones bringing aid and relief to the hundreds of thousands of Filipinos displaced by the typhoons.
We had to act and we had to act fast. Time was not on our side.
In a matter of weeks, people from every corner of Toronto donated their skills, talents, time and money to put together Love Philippines. Christians and non-Christians. Filipinos and Canadians. Chinese and South Americans. Blacks and Whites. Men and women. Young and old.
So while this iniative was birthed at a church, it is not just a Christian "thing." It is a people thing. A humanity thing.
The scriptures teach us to love one another as God loved us. On November 7, we are coming together to heed this calling. To love each other. To love the Philippines.
